Ethnic precincts are used by both migrants and the local communities to help foster cultural exposure and the exchange of different cultural ideas. However ethnic precincts in New Zealand cities are a relatively modern concept, and there is little research into the function and understanding of the role cultural space plays within the built environment. This research project, The Space In-between: Representing Transcultural Exchanges through Architecture, explores possible ways of negotiating cultural exchanges within cities. The project raises the awareness of the potential for cultural space within the built environment as a place for cultural engagement. The research explores the current issues of representing transcultural approaches through an architectural proposition utilising a section of the Dominion Road ethnic precinct. The aim of this research project is to use architecture as a tool in the investigation ethnic space plays in the development of hybrid ethnic communities.
