Jujube

Jujube is a septet written for a jazz combo. The work is intended to explore the unique music language that combines Chinese Shanxi folk song singing style and jazz instrumental performing manner. The alto saxophone and trumpet blend jazz and Shanxi traditional music in melody; the trombone enriches with its deep tone; the piano offers intricate harmonies; the double bass provides a strong foundation with deep bass lines; the percussion merges Chinese rhythms with jazz patterns, creating a unique sound for the piece. The piece starts with the alto saxophone and trumpet blending Shanxi folk melodies with jazz, while percussion combines rhythms from both traditions. As it builds, the alto saxophone and trombone shine, delivering the Shanxi melody in a jazz swing style, joined by the piano's Chinese pentatonic harmonies. The double bass holds the rhythm steady. Drums and wood block alternate between jazz and Chinese rhythms. As the end of the piece, a vibrant jazz showcase featuring the alto saxophone, trumpet, and piano emerges, with the trombone subtly bringing back the folk melody, echoing its initial motif.
