Things We Once Knew

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

Nostalgia looms large in the stories and essays of this collection. Many of the characters find it hard to reconcile their current selves with who they used to be. A mountain climber loses his nerve and with it his sense of purpose. A woman estranged from her daughter struggles to fulfill the role of “mother.” A young, married man rediscovers the rush of competition and gambling while his wife grieves for her late mother. Other characters find themselves alternately enchanted and haunted by the mythology of the past, whether it is the hardships of communist-era Prague or a time of plague on a remote frontier. A film crew believes so much in the authenticity of the past that they literally travel through time to see it. The collection ends with the opening chapters of a novella, a revenge tale in which two boys seek out their father’s murderer in order to understand the past events that defined their lives.
