Mantra: a chamber opera

Mantra: A Chamber Opera is as much an exercise in group-meditation as it is a piece of music. With a very slow, subtle unfolding of musical material and timbral shifts, the drama is distilled down to its essence. Instead of a grand narrative involving a linear plot with many characters, the action takes place largely inside the mind of the Priestess during a moment of contemplation. The sole soprano plays the part of both the Chorus and the Priestess, and alternatively intones or sings the sparse, esoteric text. The maxims that the Chorus presents are broad, fundamental principles, while the poetry that the Priestess ponders represents an attempt to interpret and understand those maxims.
