Life and death are wearing me out

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

Life and Death Are Wearing Me Out is an orchestral composition inspired by Mo Yan's novel of the same name, which explores themes of existence, resilience, and socio-political turmoil in China during a specific period. Through the journey of Ximen Nao's multiple reincarnations, the piece delves into the cyclical nature of life, drawing parallels between human experiences and the animal world. The symphonic narrative mirrors the novel's exploration of existence. Therefore, the structure of the piece transcends traditional forms, utilizing the novel's plot development to craft its musical architecture, establishing its own narrative arc while pursuing thematic unity. Motivic elements, such as the recurring 0125 pitch set, spanning throughout various tonal collections, combined with chromatic musical textures, and techniques such as sound-mass and traditional harmonic lines, are employed to achieve a grand musical effect. Additionally, familiar Chinese folk melodies such as Little Cabbage are used to represent imagery within the piece. Through the collaborative synergy of diverse instrumental sections within the orchestra, the music augments its expressive potency, beckoning listeners on a profound odyssey through Ximen Nao's surreal yet poignant narrative to contemplate the true essence of life.
