No mining has been done, but for a few years after 1916 a part of the Foothills belt, including Moon Creek area, was intensely prospected and many good seams located. These seams are the northerly extension of those formerly mined at Brule, one of the largest coal mines in Canada prior to 1928. The oil possibilities of Moon Creek area have been investigated by oil companies during the past few years ... Test wells ... have proved unsuccessful ... but the failure of these wells does not condemn this more northerly region for further testing ... The field work on which this thesis is based was begun during the summer of 1946 and completed during the summer of 1947 ... The map-area is underlain by marine and non-marine sedimentary strata, ranging in age from Devonian to Paleocene, that were deposited along the east flank of the Cordilleran geosyncline ... These strata have been much deformed by folding along northwesterly-trending axes, and by great thrust faults that parallel the axes of the folds. As a result of this folding and faulting the formations are exposed in long, relatively narrow, northwesterly-trending bands. Two major thrust fault-blocks that form the mountain belt bring to the surface Devonian rocks, which are the oldest exposed in the area. Carboniferous, Triassic, and Jurassic strata are also exposed on these ridges, whereas to the northeast and southwest, exposed formations become increasingly younger.
