The age of many of the sedimentary rock samples was determined through their content of foraminifera and diatoms by M. L. Natland and K. E. Lohman. More general age identifications were permitted by a lithologic comparison with rocks found in outcrops on land. Miocene or probably Miocene sedimentary rocks were found very widely distributed in the borderland ... Volcanics found in many other samples may also be of Miocene age ... Rocks of other ages were also found but these are more localized in their occurance ... The finding of partially consolidated Pliocene sediments on the walls of one submarine canyon indicates that canyon cutting occurred in post-Pliocene times. Similarly, the finding that submarine elevations have upper Miocene sediments entirely unlike those being formed at present in these environments shows that the diastrophism which led to the formation of the blocks, took place in late Miocene or post-Miocene time.
