Global Positioning System (GPS) has solved the issue of positioning and navigation for outdoor environments. However, it fails to achieve a good indoor performance due to the lack of line of sight with the GPS satellites as well as drastic signal attenuation due to buildings. This calls for a new technology to address this field, thus making indoor positioning a focus of research and development in the past decade. This thesis discusses a positioning system called MERLIN, which is based on the phase information of CW RF signals. Different range estimation methods are also discussed.
