Experimental lines were identified that were higher yielding than their adapted parents. The lines also maintained their diversity from the ancestors and non-parental cultivars even after selection for agronomic potential. Specific RAPD markers were identified that were present in the high yielding lines and their exotic parent, but not in the adapted parent.
