For these analyses with the branch-and-bound algorithm, the character states were assumed to be unordered, and character states were weighted equally. This resulted in 54 optimal 70-step trees in the analysis without hybrids. The presence of a unique synapomorphy (petiolar glands that are sessile or slightly raised), weakly supported monophyly of the A. berlandieri group. In the strict consensus tree there was a trichotomy of a single species, a ten species clade and a four species clade. Synapomorphies that support the clade of ten species include: possession of foliar short shoots (unique), legume margins strongly constricted, and possession of axillary inflorescences. Synapomorphies that support the clade of four species include possession of petiolar glands that are sessile (unique) and lignescent legumes.
