The proteins isolated and characterized include BHP, a non-specific DNA-binding protein that is most likely involved in nucleoid organization, BHP2, a homolog to BHP that probably functions in a similar capacity, and BT 1847, a specific DNA-binding protein that is a member of the AraC/Xy1S transcription regulator family. Preliminary data suggest that another protein, BT1271, works in conjunction with BT1847 to confer DNA-binding and specificity.
