During the 1970s, and early 1980s, the rise of national broadcasting infrastructure, mass viewing practices, and state-controlled programming in Chile created a national media space governed by authoritarian and commercial logics imposed by the military regime of General Pinochet. During the 1988 plebiscite campaign, however, a radical shift occurred in the logics shaping that space, galvanizing opposition to Pinochet and catalyzing a transition toward civilian rule. During the early 1990s, privatization, foreign investment, and technological renovation dramatically transformed Chilean television once again.
