The primary cause of their social isolation is due to issues related to race and racism. Many of the couples' family members withdrew from them as a result of their interracial relationship. Also, the couples experienced low levels of comfort when participating in some leisure activities while in public spaces. There was not a distinctive pattern of leisure activity among the couples, however there was a distinctive process that the couples went through in selecting activities prior to participation in order to avoid negative societal influences. The couples conducted thorough research of leisure offerings prior to participation to assure that they would be welcome and enjoy positive leisure experiences.
