Historical and present contexts, such as family, community, and school, are discussed as to how they shaped the knowledge used for music teaching. Analysis revealed that the teachers' images were based on their experiences within various contexts, and were used to guide their practice. The music teaching images reflected a difference in what knowledge (research-based vs. practical, public vs. private) was in operation for each teacher.
