Utilizing real time polymerase chain reactions (RT-PCR) and the SYBR Green assay, mRNA was quantified in the liver, prostate, and tumors. Finasteride significantly decreased expression of 5-alpha-reductase-II, Bcl-2, and IL-6 in tumors. IL-6 was reduced in high lycopene and broccoli, P=0.05, and TNF-alpha was lower with low lycopene, P=0.05. Overall, the combination of tomato and broccoli powders was more effective at slowing tumor growth than either tomato powder or broccoli powder alone.","abstract_html":"Tumor growth suppression was associated with reduced proliferation and increased apoptosis, as quantified by Proliferating Cell Nuclear Antigen (PCNA) immunohistochemistry and the ApoptagRTM assay, respectively.
