Quantitative analysis is brought to bear on: patterns of frontier land holding with the examination of nominal tax registries; the rate of growth of the frontier economy as a whole as well as on an industry- and firm-level basis; social structure and wealth holding through the analysis of probate records; and politics through the analysis of office holding, incumbency rates, and collective biographical data. The quantitative evidence developed in the dissertation has been cross-tabulated in order to yield new insights into the interrelation of social, economic, and political variables in historical development.
