In the early years of the nineteenth century, these two nations engaged in a number of acrimonious disputes over Florida and Texas. These disputes frequently led Spanish officials to assume that the United States government was involved with the filibusters. Issues between the two governments also had relevance to the filibustering expeditions in other ways.
