They applied innovative methods to relieve the conditions of an inadequate educational system and in the process made enormous contributions to their communities at large. Yet, their efforts met with indifference not only among contemporary whites but also among noted historians. The role of African-American women schoolteachers in the South remains an under-explored area. This study seeks to fill the void. It addresses the experiences of rural African-American women schoolteachers as a professional group within the context of institutional racism and oppression.
