Using triangulated data sources and methods, I provide an analysis of peer group critiques in an undergraduate first-year art and design course at a large research university in the United States. This includes a description of the organization of the talk in critiques, of the practices and sociocultural norms of giving praise and criticism in critiques, of students’ perceptions of critiques, as well as of instructors’ pedagogical goals for critiques.
