The first part of this dissertation gives a general formulation of the tube problem. Exact analytical elastic-plastic solutions are derived and programs are developed at the same time to make the method applicable to engineering practice. The second part of this dissertation deals with various possible responses of the tube, and the steady state solutions are derived for all the possible cases. The classical incremental method is used in the development. While it works, it is, however, seen to be very complicated. Hence, a general direct method for the shakedown analysis is developed in the third part of this dissertation, which permits a straightforward evaluation of the limit state of the structure. With a program to classify the behavior of the tube and with the shakedown solutions derived, the tube problem can be solved with great ease and accuracy. An example is given to illustrate such procedures, and the computational results are compared with those obtained experimentally.
