Initially the receiver was primarily responsible for receiving all of the count's revenues, but eventually his functions grew to include payment of most of the count's expenses, accounting for his finances, and the administration of justice. Correlated with the evolution of the functions peculiar to the position were the development of a staff and the establishment of a wage independent of the revenues of the office.
