In the first part of the research, new heuristics are developed for the case of fixed buffer sizes, so as to maximize production efficiencies. Unlike the fixed buffer approach in the first part, the second part of the research attempts to vary the buffer size dynamically to cope with the changing operational condition of the transfer line. As the manufacturing system becomes more computerized, dynamic production control tenchiques such as the flexible buffer system will be in greater demand. We compare the flexible system with the fixed system in terms of the line efficiency.
