For this, we focused on the tabular form (TF) and found that the syntactic structure of the TF is closely related with the structure of data it contains; i.e., the structure of numeric data is mapped onto the TF. TF can be used for presentation, storage, representation, and manipulation, though it is used mostly for presentation. Currently, spreadsheet programs which are based on the tabular framework are widely used in business for manipulating numeric data. But they have barely touched the potential of TF. For example, in most of the operations, the target unit of operation is a cell, not a row or a column. To provide the casual business users with the operational power for data manipulation which is clearly lacking in current spreadsheet programs, we developed the Higher-level Tabular Data Operators (HTDOs). HTDOs are intended to be an enhancement to the existing spreadsheet programs. HTDOs can be used to perform operations on the sets of objects, such as a row or a column or even a whole table, rather than on a cell.
