A continuous bench scale process was developed which employed an electrochemical reactor, a two-phase chemical reactor and a gravity settler.","A mathematical model was derived for the two reactors and was used, along with ASPEN, to predict performance of the system. Experimental results were used for refinements of the model, which was used to guide further experimental program.","The upgraded system was used to develop and verify a method for early evaluation of candidate processes, as well as criteria for system selection and design.","A refined mathematical model became thus available for use in an optimization scheme.
