Primary sources of information came from catalogs, libraries, state agencies, professional nursing organizations and minutes of meetings. Other historical facts came from documents written for recording established associate degree nursing programs and through participatory observations of the researcher.","The value of the study is that it not only provides a record of the past development of associate degree nursing programs, but that it may contribute to present thought and future decision making perspectives concerning today's nursing problems. Thinking historically and taking stock assists in determining new directions for nursing.","Conclusions are drawn about the state of associate degree nursing education in Illinois and possible future directions for nursing to meet the health care needs of people in Illinois.
