Secular misogamy is discussed in apposition to monastic and sacerdotal exhortations to celibacy, and it is studied as a separate and distinct topos in Western literature. The topos is divided into three branches: the general (addressed to Everyman), the ascetic (addressed to exemplary Christians), and the philosophic (addressed to the scholar).
