A Q-switched ruby laser and a KDP harmonic generator were used to produce light pulses whose quantum energy is more than half the band gap energy. The phbtbresponse in KI depends upon the square of the incident light intensity. Since the photo carriers are generated nearly uniformly throughout the crystal, the technique is especially useful as an intrinsic generation mechanism for transport experiments on crystals without F center or other donors. The photoconductivity is observed to increase between one and two orders of magnitude as the crystal is cooled from 77°K to 4°K reflecting the increase in mobility as the longitudinal optical modes of lattice vibration freeze out. The electric and magnetic field dependences indicate higher mobilities than usually found in colored alkali halide crystals.","abstract_html":"Photoconductivity associated with two quantum absorption processes have been observed in uncolored crystals of KI.
