Forward going two particle final states were detected in a multiparticle spectrometer consistIng of two analyzing magnets, a multiwire-proportional-chamber tracking system and a particle identification system. Recoil protons and target fragments were observed in a recoil detector which surrounded the target. The total elastic cross-sections were measured to be independent of energy at the 10% level from 35 to 225 GeV at 10.6 ub for the p and from 35 to 165 GeV at 0.64 ub for the phi. The elastic differential cross-sections were also measured. Approximately 20% of the diffractive p and phi events were found to be inelastic from an analysis of the recoil detector. The t-dependence of the fraction of diffractive events which are inelastic for both the phi and the ~ are consistent with a universal function determined from the p data.","abstract_html":"We have studied the photoproduction of p and phi vector mesons from hydrogen in the Fermilab broad band neutral beam.
