The first problem concerns the control of nonlinear systems. A model-based control method for nonlinear systems is presented and a number of problems related to its applicability are explored. An application of the method to a system undergoing a catastrophe is briefly described. The second problem concerns the description of turbulence. A simple model for turbulence consisting of a lattice of coupled fluid vortices is constructed. The model is directly related to an experimental system. Numerical results, obtained by computer simulations of this model, are compared with the experimental observations. The model displays a transition from spatiotemporal intermittency to fully developed turbulence.","abstract_html":"In this thesis two separate problems in the theory of nonlinear systems are studied.
