Outcomes of shelter use are slowly becoming available.","This exploratory research investigated the physical and social environment of a group transitional house using the ecological perspective and knowledge from the environment and behavior field. Through participant observation and interviews with six current and six former residents, the rehousing process is defined. Themes of the meaning of home, safety, and place-identity were found to be pertinent to the shelter experience.","A conceptual framework is proposed to advance present knowledge concerning the effect a transitional housing experience has on the user.
