Each of the works which fall into the category of significant extended techniques is annotated in considerable detail, the annotations being presented in two sections labeled Factual Information, and Analytical Information and Commentary. The Factual Information section includes the composer's name, dates, complete title of the piece, composition date, publisher, publishing date, to whom the work was dedicated and who commissioned it. Also included in this section is information on the first performance of the piece, the approximate length of time required to perform the work, and the instrument intended for performance. Any mutes required for performance, the range of the composition, the name and number of the movements including incipits, the difficulty level of the work, and the extended techniques employed in the piece are also listed. The Analytical Information includes a description of the musical parameters of melody, texture, rhythm and meter, pitch organization, and form. Musical examples are used throughout this section to clarify the text.
