Chapter I describes an IBM-PC based controller/averager for the Balle-Flygare spectrometer that was designed, built, and programmed here at the University of Illinois. The operation of the spectrometer has become easier and faster with this setup. The capability to record multiple free induction decays per gas pulse improves the signal to noise ratio. The microwave studies of excited vibrational states of Ar-HCl are described in Chapter II. Studying the excited states of weakly bonded complexes allows one to get information about the potential surface of the complexes far from the equilibrium configuration. The observation of pure rotational spectra provides very accurate rotational constants not available in some of the far-infrared work and gives evidence of Coriolis interactions between the excited states. The work is extended to Ar-DCl. Chapter III reports on the discovery of tunneling in diborane-HCl. This tunneling only occurs in the isotopic species that are homonuclear with respect to the borons. DCl substitution also quenches the tunneling. This leads to the surprising conclusion that diborane subunit undergoes a geared motion with the HCl subunit in which the HCl travels from one boron nucleus to the other.","abstract_html":"Studies of van der Waals and hydrogen-bonded complexes using the Balle-Flygare pulsed nozzle, Fourier transform microwave spectrometer are presented here.
