Because of this methodology's focus on group rather than individual productivity, many computer-based tools do not provide adequate support. This thesis describes a model for an active, object-oriented database which has been designed to support engineers involved in a joint design effort. This database provides the means to represent and manage information that has traditionally not been within the scope of computerized design tools. A new transaction management system is described which takes advantage of the dependency information recorded in the database. This transaction model uses optimistic locking to allow concurrent access to data by all users but minimizes the effects of conflicts when they occur.
