A qualitative inquiry based on in-depth interviews was conducted. Thirty-six scholars from three humanities disciplines--history, philosophy, and literature--participated in various stages of the study. The intent was to find out how humanists perceive informal communication, what impact it has on their research and how their research shapes their informal communication.
