Structured interviews were conducted with 106 low-income, Black adolescent females between the ages of 13 and 17 years. Results indicated that the adolescents perceived their parents as having rules and as supervising their social and achievement-related activities.","Hierarchical regression analyses were conducted to predict three measures of sexual activity and academic achievement from variables assessing parental supervision and rules and assessing background characteristics. Results indicated that adolescent age was the most significant predictor of sexual activity.","The results also indicated the role of parental supervision and rules in predicting adolescent sexual activity. Frequency of dating, number of areas in which parents had rules, and adolescent help in deciding rules were also significant predictors of frequency of sexual intercourse. For adolescents who had not experienced intercourse, level of noncoital activity was predicted by parental knowledge of the adolescents' activities. Grade point average was not predicted by the variables assessing parental supervision and rule and was not significantly related to sexual activity.","Made available in DSpace on 2011-05-07T12:01:29Z (GMT).
