The University wants to achieve and maintain superior performance in two main areas: discovering essential novel knowledge through exemplary research and preparing students for their chosen professional and scholarly paths. The University appointed the first Provost in 1963 despite being established in 1892. However, evidence from the primary and secondary documents consulted in this study reveals that the University of Chicago had various surrogates who acted in a similar position. These surrogates had limited roles linked to the contemporary Provost. With growing stakeholder needs, the University affirmed the value and importance of creating and filling the position of the Provost. The study has documented extensively the increasingly responsible and changing roles played by the Provost in the University administration. The Provost’s role as the chief officer of academic affairs at the University of Chicago is unique. The University created the Provost position to help the President manage important tasks of knowledge advancement. The Provost is a crucial communication channel between the deans, chairs, and faculties at the department, College, division, and school levels, and the President represents the University level. In addition, the Provost supports academic program development, student research, academic resource allocation, and recruitment of qualified faculty members. Due to task complexity, the evolving and changing university management environment has made the Provost an essential officer. In this regard, the Provost is appointed from the most qualified research and academic persons to support continuous university growth and development."]},{"key":"dc:format","label":"Dc Format","values":["application/pdf"]},{"key":"dc:title","label":"Title","values":["A study of the provost at the University of Chicago"]}]}],"canonical_facts":{"dc:contributor":["Span, Christopher M","Anderson, James D","Boyer, John W","Hale, Jon N"],"dc:creator":["Guymon, Christopher L."],"dc:date":["2025-04-01","2025-05"],"dc:description":["Submission published under a 24 month embargo labeled 'U of I Access', the embargo will last until 2027-05-01","The student, Christopher Guymon, accepted the attached license on 2025-03-31 at 18:22.","The student, Christopher Guymon, submitted this Dissertation for approval on 2025-03-31 at 18:29.","This Dissertation was approved for publication on 2025-04-01 at 13:18.","DSpace SAF Submission Ingestion Package generated from Vireo submission #21704 on 2025-10-19 at 19:14:30","The present study sought to explore the management of the University of Chicago by tracing the history of the leadership structure and appointments.
