While a lot of work is appearing in the localization domain, mapping has much limited options. Mapping, more often than not, would require high resolution imaging sensors, which would reveal privacy information. In this thesis, we explore the possibility of privacy preserving indoor mapping using inertial and acoustic sensors on mobile devices, without using cameras. We addressed a number of challenges including calibrating inertial sensor drift and reasoning from noisy acoustic data. We built an end-to-end mapping pipeline, and evaluated it in real-world environments. We demonstrated a spatial audio based navigation application on top of the mapping result. The results are promising, and furthermore, this opens up the future research direction in the intersection of mobile computing, sensing, signal processing, and machine learning."]},{"key":"dc:format","label":"Dc Format","values":["application/pdf"]},{"key":"dc:title","label":"Title","values":["Indoor mapping using audio reflections from mobile devices"]}]}],"canonical_facts":{"dc:contributor":["Roy Choudhury, Romit","Nahrstedt, Klara","Vasisht, Deepak","Shangguan, Longfei"],"dc:creator":["Yang, Zhijian"],"dc:date":["2023-12","2023-11-27"],"dc:description":["Submission published under a 24 month embargo labeled 'U of I Access', the embargo will last until 2025-12-01","The student, Zhijian Yang, accepted the attached license on 2023-11-27 at 11:03.","The student, Zhijian Yang, submitted this Dissertation for approval on 2023-11-27 at 11:11.","This Dissertation was approved for publication on 2023-11-27 at 12:26.","DSpace SAF Submission Ingestion Package generated from Vireo submission #20015 on 2024-03-01 at 13:31:01","With the advancement of mobile computing technologies, localization and mapping are becoming increasingly important topics in recent years.
