Using genome-mining techniques, new hybrid biosynthetic gene clusters have been discovered which contain the genes necessary for both lanthipeptide formation as well as modification on the precursor peptides by a radical SAM enzyme. Two examples of this type of gene cluster that are of particular interest to us are one from Scytonema hofmannii PCC 7110 and another from Butyrivibrio sp. VCD2006. Bioinformatic analyses were performed on these clusters, and they were coexpressed using the FAST-RiPPs method to characterize the modifications on the precursor peptides.
