In the quantitative section, 75 narratives were collected and analyzed. The distribution of HP in quotative is investigated in contrast to other quotative phrases, such as noun phrases, past verb forms, and freestanding quotations. For this purpose, three statistical models are developed using the R program. On the other hand, the qualitative section focuses on two personal narratives crossing different socio-historical ecologies. And it inquires into community values and beliefs expressed through approach devices. To this end, linguistic and ethnographic discourse analysis is developed and detailed. This research focuses on the Peruvian Spanish dialect of Lambayeque, a contact zone between the Peruvian Amazon, coast, and Andes, where different types of modernity/coloniality and a traditional society coexist. The analysis has found that quotations with the verbal form of the historical present have a discursive function, showing a surprising and dramatic narrative event. Moreover, these quotations suggest intimacy and moments relevant to the subject in the narratives that do not always coincide with the surprise and dramatic events."]},{"key":"dc:format","label":"Dc Format","values":["application/pdf"]},{"key":"dc:title","label":"Title","values":["Approaching devices in personal narratives in Lambayeque, Peru"]}]}],"canonical_facts":{"dc:contributor":["MacDonald, Jonathan","Smalls, Krystal","Koven, Michele","Callesano, Salvatore"],"dc:creator":["Fernández-Doig, Fabiola"],"dc:date":["2023-08","2023-06-08"],"dc:description":["Submission published under a 24 month embargo labeled 'U of I Access', the embargo will last until 2025-08-01","The student, Fabiola Fernández-Doig, accepted the attached license on 2023-06-05 at 15:37.","The student, Fabiola Fernández-Doig, submitted this Dissertation for approval on 2023-06-05 at 15:49.","This Dissertation was approved for publication on 2023-06-08 at 11:23.","DSpace SAF Submission Ingestion Package generated from Vireo submission #19406 on 2023-12-04 at 17:17:51","This study investigates approach devices in personal narratives (i.e., quotations and the verbal form of the historical present (HP)) through a mixed methodology in two sections.
