The widespread interest and utilization of their tunable properties will likely result in the release of nanoparticles into the environment. Additional molecular understanding of the protein corona is needed to prevent negative environmental and health impacts and to develop sustainable nanotechnology. In this work, Chapter 1 introduces the field of nanotechnology and colloidal inorganic nanoparticles with a focus on gold and iron oxide nanoparticles as well as the concepts of the nanobio interface and the importance of the protein corona. Chapter 2 details the importance of isolation method on the protein corona composition when analyzing the protein corona upon incubation with gold-coated iron oxide nanoparticles. Chapter 3 describes the consequences of protein disulfide isomerase, a redox-active protein, upon exposure to gold nanoparticles using limited proteolytic mass spectrometry analysis.
