The preliminary analysis required prediction of nondimensional flow parameters and turbulence scales to ensure the relevance of the facility. The facility was installed vertically spanning 4 floors while passing through 3 man holes that existed in the building. This unique installation location created several challenges that were addressed in the mechanical design of the facility. A variety of major equipment was selected and the requisite analysis to ensure appropriate selections is described as well. Some experimental measurements characterizing the flow in the channel will be presented. Lastly, the results of an analysis of a numerical database that studied the effects of a high mass loading of particles on coherent flow structures will be described.
