The validity of such an assertion rests on a clear definition of the student engagement concept. Through a critical review of research on student engagement, this paper argues that it is more meaningful to talk about student engagement in relation to specific classroom practices, and not just as a general concept. The paper focuses on what student engagement means specifically for vocal classroom communication to discover how educators can facilitate engaging discussions in their classrooms and know that they have been successful in their endeavors. The paper at first discusses why such an approach makes sense based on findings in the literature. The paper goes on to examine the various aspects, including components, facilitators, indicators, and outcomes, that are considered in the research on student engagement as a general concept and in vocal communication.
