To broaden equal opportunity, each branch of service has to be committed to removing prejudice and bias and fostering an environment in which every service member is treated with dignity and respect. Research suggests that awareness, accountability, and intentional, swift action contributes to a more diverse and inclusive workforce. Examined through a critical lens, this qualitative study explores how the U.S. Coast Guard and its service academy are breaking down racial barriers to help improve recruitment and retention. The findings of this study indicate that such barriers within the Service are related to the findings of previously conducted research (DoD Board Report on Diversity and Inclusion, 2020; USCG Diversity and Inclusion Action Plan, 2020). Recommendations include taking a critical approach to understanding historical and or/institutional racial inequities, implementing D&I education programs, and using survey data results to identify gaps and to formulate policy/action plans."]},{"key":"dc:format","label":"Dc Format","values":["application/pdf"]},{"key":"dc:title","label":"Title","values":["Eliminating barriers to diversity and inclusion within the U.S. Coast Guard & its service academy: An examination of policies and practices that have impacted service members & applicants of color"]}]}],"canonical_facts":{"dc:contributor":["Ward Hood, Denice","Pak , Yoon","Mason, Curtis","Huang , Wenhao D"],"dc:creator":["Hills, Precious R."],"dc:date":["2022-05","2022-04-22"],"dc:description":["Submission published under a 24 month embargo labeled 'U of I Access', the embargo will last until 2024-05-01","The student, Precious Hills, accepted the attached license on 2022-04-21 at 16:32.","The student, Precious Hills, submitted this Dissertation for approval on 2022-04-21 at 16:52.","This Dissertation was approved for publication on 2022-04-22 at 09:52.","DSpace SAF Submission Ingestion Package generated from Vireo submission #17893 on 2022-11-11 at 12:11:53","The diverse racial makeup of the U.S. military is one of its greatest assets.
