Since nicotine activates the SNS, chronic nicotine consumption may also increase myelopoiesis. This is relevant to human health outcomes because myelopoiesis contributes to the progression of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease. To address this, mice were provided high dose nicotine in drinking water for two and three weeks, and leukocyte production and distribution were assessed. Nicotine supplementation for two weeks did not alter the production or distribution of leukocytes, but three weeks of nicotine increased hematopoietic progenitor proliferation in the spleen and mildly increased leukocyte counts in the spleen but not blood. Next, the sympathomimetic drug guanethidine was used to assess the effect of SNS inhibition during nicotine exposure. In this study, guanethidine did not influence leukocyte distribution or production in mice treated with nicotine. Collectively, three weeks of nicotine supplementation enhanced splenic hematopoiesis without meaningfully increasing the systemic leukocyte supply."]},{"key":"dc:format","label":"Dc Format","values":["application/pdf"]},{"key":"dc:title","label":"Title","values":["Nicotinic regulation of hematopoiesis"]}]}],"canonical_facts":{"dc:contributor":["McKim, Daniel B"],"dc:creator":["Chalen Paredes, Izan"],"dc:date":["2022-04-29T21:41:39Z","2024-04-29T21:47:53Z","2021-12","2021-08-06"],"dc:description":["Submission published under a 24 month embargo labeled 'U of I Access', the embargo will last until 2023-12-01","The student, Izan Chalen Paredes, accepted the attached license on 2021-07-27 at 18:02.","The student, Izan Chalen Paredes, submitted this Thesis for approval on 2021-07-27 at 18:07.","This Thesis was approved for publication on 2021-08-06 at 15:00.","DSpace SAF Submission Ingestion Package generated from Vireo submission #17091 on 2022-04-06 at 17:16:10","Made available in DSpace on 2022-04-29T21:41:39Z (GMT).
