Through years of convivios and pláticas, I have collected stories that connect our family’s vulnerabilities to a larger narrative that paints life as messy and de-skilled. By thinking through Abraham Cruzvillegas’s (2013) concept of autoconstrucción as a modality for life, I tease out the ways in which their improvisational approach to living uncovers permissions for my own identity formation. This in turn inspires questions for pedagogical possibilities for art-making and teaching postures.","abstract_html":"In this paper, I explore my family’s history to identify patterns of self-construction, or autoconstrucción.
