Advancements in Radar Sensing and Communications through Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RIS) represents a promising technology for reshaping wireless channels, offering a new degree of freedom in the design of next-generation wireless networks. Specifically, RIS has shown significant potential in enabling smart, programmable environments by manipulating wireless propagation to establish robust links for both communication and sensing purposes. This dissertation investigates the optimal design of RIS for target estimation and detection in radar systems. Additionally, it examines the joint enhancement of sum-rate performance and target detection capabilities in integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) frameworks. Both conventional diagonal RIS configurations and the recently proposed beyond diagonal RIS architecture are employed in this study.
