The role of language in the development of modernity: the discussion of origins of language in Rousseau and Vico

This dissertation examines parts of the eighteenth-century discussion of the origins of language with reference to a developing awareness of the characteristics of the modern mind. Giambattista Vico and Jean-Jacques Rousseau are focal points for this study because they most strongly and clearly express an awareness of the connection between modern consciousness and language.
