It is estimated there are over thirty million edentulous people in the United States alone. In this population the use of conventional treatment modalities, i.e., full or partial removable dentures, has been demonstrated to result in: (1) loss of alveolar bone height with subsequent inability to retain a denture, (2) inflammation of surrounding gingival tissue with concomitant pain and decreased retentive capabilities, and (3) accelerated loss of natural supporting dentition (8,24,30). In the patient population exhibiting edentulous posterior regions (represented schematically in Figure 1), one or more of these problems are often manifested. Depending on the nature of the posterior area (i.e., location, size, and surrounding tissue), standard fixed bridge techniques are often impossible, and removable prosthodontic therapy may be severely compromised by the condition of the alveolar ridge.
