Computers are becoming an integral part of routine clinical medicine. Recently, with the advent of the microcomputer, it has become possible to move this new technology into the operating room and, therefore, into the anesthesiologist's domain.Anesthesiology is a very dynamic field: some research in this field is making the practice of anesthesia a more precise science. Nevertheless, today anesthesia is at least as much an art as it is a science, relying heavily on the experience of the anesthesiologist in attendance to diagnose and treat the patient. This normally involves choice of an appropriate drug, calculation of the correct dosage, and administration of the drug via an intravenous drip or as an intravenous bolus injection.
