A Burn Ratio That Predicts the Relative Extent of Combustion in Metallic Materials.
Abstract
dc:description.abstractThe objective of this work was to gain an understanding of the severity of combustion of metals in oxygen environments. Fires have occurred in oxygen compressors, pipelines, valves and storage tanks. A thermodynamic burn ratio is proposed that predicts the severity of combustion of metals in oxygen environments and is favorably compared with published results and with experimental work described. The experimental work measures the severity of combustion using silver, copper-nickel, tin babbitt, carbon steel and aluminum. The thermodynamic burn ratio is the ratio between the heat released during oxidation and the heat required to melt or vaporize the material.
